How to Search for Your Medications on Medicare.gov

Navigating the world of Medicare can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to finding the right drug plan. Fortunately, Medicare.gov offers a user-friendly platform to help you compare plans and find the best option for your needs. Today, we’ll walk you through the steps to look up your medications on Medicare.gov, ensuring you make informed decisions about your healthcare.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Access Medicare.gov: Start by opening your web browser and typing in Medicare.gov. This will take you to the official Medicare website.

  2. Optional Account Creation: While you have the option to create a personal account, today we’ll focus on how to search for your medications without one.

  3. Find Health and Drug Plans: Click on the “Find Health & Drug Plans” link. This will guide you to the section where you can begin your search.

  4. Enter Your Location: Type in your zip code and select your county. This ensures that the plans you view are relevant to your area.

  5. Select Plan Type: Choose “Medicare Drug Plan” and then click “Find Plans.”

  6. Extra Help Options: If you receive any extra help with your drug costs, make sure to indicate this on the form. This can affect the plans available to you.

  7. Include Drug Costs: Ensure that the option to include drug costs is selected. This will provide a more accurate comparison of plans.

  8. Enter Your Medications: Start typing in the names of your medications, along with the dosage, quantity, and frequency of refills. Add each medication to your drug list.

  9. Continue to Pharmacy Selection: Once you’ve entered all your medications, click “Continue” to proceed to the pharmacy selection. Choose your preferred pharmacy and click “Continue.”

  10. Review Plans: Medicare.gov will display a list of plans in order of cost-effectiveness. Review these options to find the best plan for your needs.

  11. Enroll in a Plan: If you find a plan that suits you better than your current one, click “Enroll” and then “Join the Plan.” You’ll need to fill out some personal information, including your Medicare details.

  12. Complete the Application: Follow the prompts to complete the application. Once finished, sign the application to enroll.

What to Do Next

After completing your enrollment, keep an eye out for your new Medicare card. If you encounter any issues or have questions about your application, don’t hesitate to reach out to the carrier you’ve applied to join.

Below are a few notes of things to watch out for that may be helpful to you.

·         Make sure you correctly select whether your drug is a tablet or capsule, it can make a difference in price.

·         If you get the drug at the hospital or via infusion services, that is normally under your Medicare Part B and will not show up on Medicare.gov.

·         Each carrier covers different insulin.  If you cannot find yours talk to your doctor about alternatives.

·         Unless you get a letter stating your plan is canceling, you do not have to do anything to keep your current plan.  If your plan is ending, you will need to enroll in another plan.

·         Once you enroll in a new plan for 2027, your 2026 plan will be cancelled automatically.

·         Butler’s Apothecary shows twice on the pharmacy selection list.  Select both to see pricing, as one always shows as out of network.

·         Medicare will not contact you to enroll in a plan.  Do not give your Medicare number to anyone over the phone that you do not have a relationship with.
